I am a Minivan Mom

I don’t really have much to post today, however it’s been over a week since my last post and darnit! I’m going to keep this New Years Resolution!!!

I suppose I can update everyone on how some of my resolutions have been going.

Here’s a brief overview.

1. Well… I blogged twice last week! That’s more than once a week! Go me! And today I’m staying on track as well.

2. Meal planning: I planned every day last week, but didn’t follow through 100%. Things came up or I’d run out of cheese and couldn’t get to the store because I didn’t have a vehicle, so that meal would be postponed until the next day.

3. No yelling: We’ve been better about this. We are by no means perfect and some days it’s really, really hard. Especially when you have children who cry over spilled water (that’s right, not even milk – water!) But we’re working on it.

4. Early to Bed/Early to Rise: Well…. some nights have been better than others. The first few days I was good about being in bed by 12:30. Now it’s back to an average of about 1:30, but usually before 2 am. I need to keep working at it.!

In other news, our ear infection free household no longer has that status. The Little One was screaming in agony this past week. I thought she was just fighting sleep, she was tired and had a drippy nose. I kept asking her if each part of her body hurt and she kept telling me “No!”

Sick Baby

The Little One the day before I took her to the doctor and was diagnosed with a double ear infection. ūüė¶

By the third day, when suddenly her fever spiked and she was able to communicate what hurt, I said enough is enough. As stated above, I didn’t have my own vehicle. My car was totaled in November when the CV Joint broke while turning onto the highway. (Real fun spot to have your car die!) ¬†(Not So Fun Fact! That was also the day I got into my first ever car accident! Hitting black ice and rear ending an SUV with The Husband’s car! Needless to say, I was afraid of driving for a good 4 days!)

Anyway, I have the best neighbors and my good friend/neighbor down the road said I could borrow her van. I had the fun task of pushing the stroller through a foot of snow to get to her house a few doors down, but we made it and I got to practice driving a minivan. Got The Little One to the doctor and sure enough, double ear infection. The right ear had ruptured and had puss inside, the left was just read. Ten days of antibiotics orally three times per day and ear drops in the right ear twice per day. By day 2 she was already feeling much better!

Not So Sick Baby

After about 4 days of meds she was feeling MUCH better! (She was actually feeling much better when she woke up on day 2 after only 2 doses of meds!)

So, the conclusion of the above, I suppose, is that I need my own vehicle. The Husband and I agreed to start looking about a month ago, looking for a good deal, and a good deal I found! Got a great blue Dodge Grand Caravan SXT for under 3K from a very nice man. We found it using CarSoup.com, though he was also listed on CraigsList.

Blue Steel

Blue Steel

Here she is! “Blue Steel” is what I’m naming her. Or “Buh-KAWWW!” (like the sound a chicken makes! – Because The Husband and I like to name our cars based on the letters on the license plate. I previously owned Jibble and Pixed. The Husband currently owns Vixy.)

So… I’m actually super excited to own this minivan. I know that it was super well taken care of for the first 5 years of it’s life – thanks CarFax! – and the guy who sold i to me (second owner) seems like ¬†a very honest guy and seems to have taken pretty good care of it.

My only issue with minivans is the lack of ability to check the blind spot! I’m a shoulder checker! I can’t do that in this van! I’m considering getting a blind spot mirror to attach to my drivers side mirror. Hopefully very, very soon!

So there you have it. An update on me and mine. It’s not food, but it will do. Hopefully next week I’ll food blog again!

Why I Love My Job

There have been very few jobs in my past where I could honestly say, “I love my job!”
Right now? I’m totally loving my job!

I actually don’t work just¬†one¬†job though. I have multiple jobs.

My first job is the hardest: Mom. I am the mother of two beautiful little girls. My 5 year old, Allison, drives me bananas with her constant, “Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!” and whining and crying. But I love her, she can be the sweetest little girl in the world. The Little One aka Miranda, who just turned 10 months old last week is simply adorable. She’s gone from being “The Crying Baby” to “The Crawling Baby” and now she’s “The Standing Baby” and even took her first steps while we were on vacation last week! She has yet to repeat it more than once, but I’m so proud of her! Best of all, she can’t say, “Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!” yet and whine – she does cry though at times.

My next job is my newest job: Sample Lady.
OK, the actual title is “Product Demonstrator” but let’s not kid ourselves, I’m a sample lady!!! When they schedule me I head on over to the Super Target and spend 5 hours offering samples. I love that it’s something new each day. My first day of work I got to give away candy! How popular can one person be? The next day was coconut water. I’m not a fan, but it was great asking our Target guests how they liked the coconut water and hearing the different responses. Even better was the looks on their faces as they took a sip!

My favorite job though, I have to say, is my¬†biggest¬†job. It’s the most work but I¬†thoroughly¬†enjoy it.
My mother owns the publishing company Melange Books and the Young Adult imprint Fire and Ice.
I am the web designer/webmaster. I am also head of the art department, so I’m in charge of both creating book covers and assigning covers to our other artists. I am also in charge of formatting each of our books for Amazon Kindle¬†– a¬†big job, but somebody’s gotta do it!

And lastly, my newest job: Web designer! I’ve done some web design in the past, previously for my mom’s author sites and, obviously, the book publishing sites. I got my start when I was very young and the internet was new to my home. I was probably 12 when I first started teaching myself HTML and have never stopped. I know there’s tons more to learn, but I’m eager for this challenge! (The extra money will be quite nice as well, with Allison started dance classes in September!!!)

I’m constantly crazy busy, but hopefully with cutting back on some of the time I spend on Facebook I’ll be able to hone some better time-management skills!

More Projects!

I know, I know! I’ve been MIA for soooo long!!!

Things have been pretty darn busy here!
The month of April brought us two birthday parties for my daughter Allison. She turned 5 on April 14 and we celebrated on her birthday by inviting all of our immediate family over for burgers on the grill. We had a fun time! The highlight of our day? The giant teddy bear my brother in law bought for her!!! We love it!

Allison and Miranda both love the giant teddy bear from Uncle Kyle!

The second birthday party didn’t come until this past Sunday. We invited my three nieces and all ¬†of the girls from Allison’s class at preschool. We ended up with 8 little girls in our house for a tea party! It was a lot of fun. We served REAL tea, which all but one of the girls hated! (I’m not going to lie, I thought it was pretty gross, too!!!) After that everyone was served water or apple juice. They spent a lot of time running around the house and running around the yard! Thankfully I had my sister Katie and my sister in law Jennifer around to help out!!!

All of the girls at Allison’s tea party birthday party!

The table set for the tea party!

In addition to all of that chaos, I don’t believe I’ve mentioned this, but I work for a small publishing company designing book covers and¬†maintaining¬†the website. At the end of April, not only did we release NINE books but we also launched a Young Adult website with another book! If you’re a reader be sure to check out Melange Books¬†and the YA site Fire and Ice.

You can also find us on Facebook! Melange here:  https://www.facebook.com/MelangeBooksLLC
And Fire and Ice here:  https://www.facebook.com/FireIceYA

So, I’m still working on completing my bow holders for the girls…. but hopefully I’ll get around to finishing soon!!!
I have been making bows now though! My sister and I have started our own little side business to sell bows and other items. You can find us on Facebook here: Enchanting Elegance by K & C

I made these last night! LOVE them! Pig tail bows!

One of the first bows I made! LOVE this one!

AND….. My newest project!!!

$5.36 desk from Goodwill!!!!

This desk set me back a whopping $5.36 at the Goodwill! I’m SO excited for it! My friend Jamie¬†introduced me to DIY chalk paint! You mix Plaster of Paris with paint and voila! No need to sand and prime! I’m obviously going to remove the stickers that are stuck on the desk, but I’m going to paint this baby PURPLE! I’m going to use left over paint from when we painted Allison’s bedroom (which is now the playroom!) and my bedroom. The playroom is a vibrant purple from a “Barbie” line of paint – called “Girls Night.” The paint in my bedroom is a very soft purple, almost white. I can’t remember what it’s called, but it’s very pretty. I’m so excited for this project! I think I’m going to head to Michael’s tomorrow to get the Plaster of Paris and get this party started! I can’t wait to see how this turns out! ūüôā Oh! And a friend suggested letting Allison put hand prints on it and I thought it was a great idea! So I’m going to have her hand print parts of it and put Miranda’s foot prints on other parts (since she obviously can’t make a good hand print at only 8 months old!!!)

Spring Cleaning

Spent the last two days doing some Spring Cleaning activities.

I spent virtually¬†all¬†of Saturday working on putting prices on crap for our garage sale this summer. Two of those big ol’ bins you get from Target plus 4 diaper boxes. Holy cow, I think I may have been a little dizzy on Sharpie fumes after all of that!!!!!

I also finished watching the TV series “United States of Tara” on Netflix.¬†¬†GREAT¬†show! I totally recommend it, though don’t watch with kids around. That was my show to watch after the kids were in bed. Lots of swearing. Not usually my kind of thing, but the plot was so compelling I could overlook the colorful language.

Sunday’s task was to clean the bathroom! Yuck! We’re not big on cleaning in this house. As in, I’m the only one who will clean. I swear sometimes, it’s like we live in a time where the wife does all of the housework. Plus, trying to keep up with cleaning up after a 4 year old is not an easy task! So, essentially, the only time our house gets a good, thorough cleaning is before we host events. Usually that just means Allison’s birthday in April. I suppose it’s a good thing that Miranda has a September birthday! One more reason to clean! Plus, every 3 years we host Christmas with my dad’s extended family. My parents used to host, but once The Husband and I bought our house in 2009 and my parents saw how big our kitchen/dining room was, my mom enlisted us. Works for me! I’d like to be a Martha Stewart type (hence my striving to be a Domestic Goddess!) Anyway, last April I was about 4 months pregnant with Miranda and was suffering, even before the pregnancy, from horrible back pain. I asked The Husband to help me clean the bathroom and he really did not. I ended up cleaning the sink, mirror and toilet. He, after much nagging, the night before the party, swept and mopped the floor but he did a really half-assed job! I was not impressed but I had other things on my mind.

So there you have it, bathroom is now clean! I also cleaned my car! This is a once a year project for me, spring time (yay!) but again, last year due to the pregnancy, there was no way for me to clean the car. It was a total mess – papers on the floor, crumbs in the backseat, used tissues shoved in the cup holders. Just gross. So it’s now cleaned and vacuumed. The best part? I found my sunglasses!!! I wear glasses and it makes me dizzy to switch between regular lenses and¬†prescription¬†sunglasses, so I have some trendy glasses that I can wear over my glasses. No worries, I’m only nerdy enough to do that while I’m driving!!! If I wear them at the pool I take off my regular glasses ūüôā

In addition to the clean car and bathroom, we also went on a family walk! It was great! We walked down to the park which is a few blocks away, it was kind of annoying though because there was some sort of party going on and all 4 swings were in use. It really irritates me as well when older kids use the baby swings, too! It’s not like I can put the baby on a regular swing! And here are these kids who are so big they can’t even put their legs in the holes!!! They finally left the swings so Miranda could have a turn. This baby loves the swing. ūüôā ¬†In addition to the annoying kids with the swing, while Allison was playing in the sand near the base of a jungle gym, one of those kids decided to start kicking sand at her. The Husband shrugged it off and said “Kids will be kids” to which I replied “If you caught Allison doing that she’d be getting told off right now!” I let it go until this kid took this sand bucket and started¬†dumping it on her head! I don’t care what The Husband or this group of kids though, I called out “Hey! Please don’t dump that on her head!!!” and the kid stopped. Thank goodness. That was the time that the girl who was “supervising” them came over to actually watch them, she looked to be about 13 and there were maybe 6 small kids. *sighs* I hate when parents don’t watch their children!!!

So after that we enjoyed a dinner of burgers on the George Foreman Grill, gave the girls baths, got them to bed and enjoyed a “Supernatural” marathon!

Oh, and on another note – Won another contest today! I won a hair bow from¬†Krazy Busy Mama Crafts! I got to choose one so I’ve requested a cupcake one I saw in her shop. I haven’t heard back on it yet, but yay! So exciting!

Until next time ūüôā

What’s For Dinner?

We had a rough night last night. I’m a night owl and ever since Saturday morning I’ve been getting up early – as in, getting maybe 6 hours of sleep? Last night I was really feeling it, all those nights catching up to me at once!

I crashed at about 1am (early for me) soon after The Husband came home from work. I knew I was exhausted so I had baby Miranda sleep in my bed so that I wouldn’t have to get up to nurse her if she woke up! ¬†(We pushed the bed against the wall so that we wouldn’t have to worry about her rolling out.)

Whelp, The Husband went back to work – he is scheduled for regular shifts, then goes in with another guy to do basic building¬†maintenance whenever they can make time. He had to wait until the other guy got done working his shift at his other job, then they went back in to do work. He got home around 7am! That was around the time that Miranda woke up and decided she was up for the day. Ugh… I was still absolutely exhausted!

Well, I felt bad for The Husband since he’d worked Tuesday 4:45pm until about 12:30am… Then went back from about 1:30am until 7am (or so) – he clearly needed the sleep more than I did! So…. I took the baby out to the living room and crashed on the floor. She played nicely while Allison watched Netflix for Kids. I ended up getting up around 1 (though I didn’t really “sleep” more like I just “dozed.”)

I sent Allison to wake up The Husband around 3pm thinking he worked tonight. Well, turns out he didn’t. That’s all good and well but now I have to figure out dinner, because I only make a “real” dinner when he’s home. Not sense cooking anything even halfway “fancy” when the two picky eaters (Allison and myself) are the only ones eating!

I ended up making Spinach Ravioli that we got at Aldi, with Classico pasta sauce, meatballs and garlic toast. It was delish. We have some left overs and hopefully The Husband doesn’t eat it all before I can get at it!

Oh, and on another note about being tired? Clearly the poor quality of sleep I had last night didn’t really help refresh me because I ended up falling asleep for almost an hour in the rocking chair with Miranda this evening! And of course, I woke up when Allison came in and she woke Miranda up, too. *sighs*
